Fortunately the staff at Littlemore allowed us to use their pitch to host Didcot. Even so we needed to arrive early to help the local groundsman reassemble the goals on an overcast but humid Sunday morning. Both teams were unable to either climb up or slip down the final table and so there was only pride to play for. Colts’ Coach Roger Cherry decided to start with Bradley Rowbotham in the middle of a back four with Mitchell White pushing Wayne Beechers up front to partner Daniel Dennis. This looked like an excellent decision when, after just four minutes, Wayne controlled Curtis Adams’ left sided cross and turned the defender before slotting the ball into the corner of the net.

As has so often been the case when Colts start brightly, they continued to dominate the first half. Luke Holt went close as did Wayne and there were several goalmouth incidents but Colts failed to add to their lead. However, on 20 minutes following some excellent work down the right wing from Liam Williams. His cross found Luke who chipped the ball over the keeper to double Colts’ advantage. Didcot fought back with their midfield players trying hard to breach the Colts back line. Bradley, though, read the game well and was always usually on hand to deny the visitors a scoring opportunity. Just before half time Didcot did force the ball into the net but the goal was disallowed for handball.

Playing for first time for many months on a warm day, the boys looked tired at half time. Roger brought on Grady Cherry, Tyler Walker and Adam Martin to ensure that Colts maintained their advantage. They started the second half well and Colts continued to play the better football. In particular, their passing around the edge of the box was excellent and led to a number of scoring opportunities; but they had to wait for another 10 minutes before adding to their lead. Colts’ corners, which have been working well in recent weeks, once again led to uncertainty in the opposition defence and Charlie Wood smashed the ball home giving the keeper no chance. A few minutes later a high deep cross from the left from Luke Holt cleared everyone, the keeper included, and crept into the goal at the far post.

To their credit Didcot kept pushing forwards but the Colts’ defence held firm allowing the away side only optimistic long shots. Meanwhile on the break Colts looked sharp and it was not long before they increased their lead to 5-0 when Mitchell calmly tucked the ball into net from close range. Shortly after Curtis completed the scoring with typical run down the left flank ending with fiercely struck shot into the roof of the net. It was not long before Clive Roberson, who had another excellent game as referee, blew the final whistle. Many thanks to Gary for running the line and we all wish him well in the League 2 play offs next week.

So Colts finish their first season of 11-a-side football with another win making it 17 victories from 24 matches loosing only four times and finishing fourth in the table. This excellent record is largely due to the efforts of Roger and Stuart who have coached the boys with great enthusiasm. Their commitment has resulted in an excellent and enjoyable season for the Under 11s – next year promotion beckons.

Team: J Russell, B Muinami, M White, B Rowbotham, C Adams, L Williams, J Roberson, C Wood, L Holt, D Dennis, W Beechers, subs G Cherry, T Walker, A Martin

Man of the Match: 1st half W Beechers, 2nd half L Holt

Kidlington

Posted by robin on April 27, 2008, 5:53 pm
Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report
27th April 2008

Kidlington 4 - Oxford City Colts 5

Colts will wonder how they scored only five goals whilst conceding four in this thrilling end of season match against old rivals Kidlington. The answers lie in another fantastic display by the Kidlington keeper and some careless defensive errors which made this a most entertaining and sometimes infuriating game for the Colts’ fans. With the Easter holidays over Coach Roger Cherry had nearly a full strength squad to pick from against a Kidlington side who have struggled to find consistency throughout the season despite having some very quick and talented young players.

Playing up the slope on the Evans Lane pitch in the first half, Colts started with three at the back with Mitchell White sitting just in front of the defensive line. Colts started slowly and after just three minutes Kidlington capitalised on the visitors’ failure to clear a cross from the left wing as one of their strikers calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. This, however, did not provide the necessary wake up call for the Colts as five minutes later some more poor defending allowed Kidlington to double their lead with a well struck shot hit from just inside the penalty area.

Having gifted Kidlington a two-goal lead Colts started to play the passing football that has served them well throughout the season. Their first effort on goal came after ten minutes when Bradley Rowbotham chipped the keeper; his shot unfortunately just clearing the bar. On fourteen minutes, however, Colts were back in the match when Grady Cherry chased down a long throw from Tyler Walker, taking the ball into the area he beat the keeper at the near post with well directed shot. Colts then started to dominate with the rest of the half played mostly in and around the Kidlington area. Once again Colts looked dangerous at set pieces. From a half-cleared corner Wayne Beechers shot fiercely from 25 yards but saw his effort clear the bar. However, it was not long before Colts were back on level terms. Grady flicked the ball into box where the Kidlington defender handled and Tyler buried the spot kick in the top right hand corner. Tyler scored again a few minutes later finishing well from another excellent corner and just before the break Bradley made it 4-2 to the Colts with a firm strike from the right edge of the box.

Having dominated the latter part of the first period and now playing with the slope it was easy to imagine that Colts would run away with the match in the second half. This though, was far from what happened. Colts started strongly and were a constant threat in attack. However they were denied by an outstanding display from the Kidlngton keeper who stopped everything as Colts tried to extend their lead. Two excellent saves from Bradley’s wicked corners kept the home team in the game. Charlie Wood nearly sealed it for the Colts with a little over ten minutes to go; his sweetly timed header from another well delivered corner just clearing the bar.

With the final whistle approaching and Colts in control the match suddenly took a very different direction. Colts lost concentration allowing Kidlington to seize the initiative. On fifty minutes the home side’s pacey strikers broke through Colts’ defensive line and reduced the lead to just one goal. Sensing that they might be able to get something out of the match, Kidlington pushed forward in numbers and with five minutes to go they forced a corner. A high ball resulted in some head tennis which ended with the ball in the back of the Colts’ goal. So despite having dominated large periods of the match Colts found themselves level with just a few minutes remaining. However, on their next attack Colts were awarded a free kick just outside the Kidlington box. As he has done on several occasions this season, up stepped Bradley to strike the ball cleanly into the top corner of the net giving Colts the victory in the dying seconds (eat your heart out Cristiano Ronaldo!).

So another win for the Colts but they made heavy weather of a match they looked liked winning easily. Greater concentration throughout the game should help avoid too many more exciting finishes like this. Credit, though, must go to the hard working Kidlington team especially their keeper who had another exceptional game. Many thanks to Clive for running the line (again).

Team: R Horwood, A Martin, H Comely, W Beechers, M White, G Cherry, L Williams, T Walker, D Dennis, B Rowbotham, subs J Russell, J Roberson, B Muinami, C Wood

Man of the Match: 1st half T Walker 2nd half B Rowbotham

Horspath

Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report
20th April 2008

Horspath 2 - Oxford City Colts 8

The first of three rearranged fixtures caused by the atrocious weather earlier in the season saw Colts travel the short distance to Horspath on a misty Sunday morning. With an unseasonably low temperature for late April, Coach Roger Cherry made sure the boys arrived early to warm up and prevent another slow start. With only 12 boys available some reshuffling was required which saw Joe Roberson and Curtis Adams start in defence with Liam Williams and Brian Muinami moving up into midfield.

Following Stuart’s warm up, Colts started the game at high speed catching Horspath cold after just two minutes. Grady Cherry arrived late in the penalty area to volley home a well-delivered corner from Tyler Walker. Horspath struggled to find their feet as Colts continued to dominate the early proceedings. Tyler was unlucky not to score with a sweetly timed strike flying just over the bar. However, Colts soon doubled their lead as Bradley Rowbotham ran strongly through the inside left position before slotting the ball into the corner of the net.

Most of the rest of the first period was played in the Horspath half with Colts creating a number of scoring chances. They looked particularly dangerous from set pieces with both Tyler and Curtis delivering dangerous balls into the penalty area. The Horspath keeper was constantly busy and did well to prevent Colts from adding to their lead. Brian Muinami was unlucky not to score; his well-timed shot striking the bar. But just before the break Colts scored again. A poor clearance from the Horspath defence allowed Bradley the opportunity to strike the ball high into the net from a narrow angle.

There was little for Roger to say at half time other than tell the boys to continue playing as they had done and not to become complacent; and for most of the second half this is exactly what they did. After just five minutes Colts scored again. Under pressure from the Colts’ attack following another excellent corner, Horspath failed to clear the ball which finally found its way into the net with the help of Grady. The visitors continued to dominate and Harvey Comely, now playing up front, was denied a goal when his shot hit the post. With such constant pressure another goal was inevitable and Colts went five up when Tyler struck the ball into the corner of the net. An unfortunate incident saw Colts’ next goal when a misunderstanding from a back pass saw Curtis chip the ball over the advancing keeper.

With a six-goal lead it was not surprising that Colts started to loose concentration. With the midfield pushing up to support the attack, Horspath found more space in the middle of the park and an accurate through ball allowed their centre forward to run through the middle of the Colts’ defence and slot the ball into the corner of the net. This set back made the Colts lift their game again and Brian was unlucky not to score when his well-struck shot forced an excellent full length diving save from the Horspath keeper. Harvey restored the six goal advantage forcing the ball past the unlucky keeper who failed to hold a difficult high ball into the box from Brian. To their credit Horspath continued to battle and scored a second goal in the last five minutes when Colts took far too long to clear ball from their own penalty area. Colts’ final goal came moments later when Bradley struck the ball home firmly following a blocked shot from the lively Daniel Dennis. In dying seconds Bradley was unlucky not to get yet another when his fierce shot struck the bar.

This was a comfortable victory for the boys, who started the game playing at a high tempo which they maintained for the majority of the match. Having struggled after slow starts in a number of previous matches, this performance is another encouraging sign that things are progressing well. Many thanks to Andy Bone for refereeing, to Clive for running the line and Sue for providing hot drinks on a cold morning.

Team: R Horwood, A Martin, H Comely, J Roberson, C Adams, B Muinami, G Cherry, L Williams, T Walker, D Dennis, B Rowbotham, subs J Russell

Man of the Match: 1st half H Comely 2nd half T Walker

Hillingdon

Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report
1st April 2008

Oxford City Colts U11 Invitation XI 0 – Hillingdon Borough U12 0

What an excellent match this proved to be on the main pitch at Court Place Farm. With the boys enjoying a good run in the league, a fixture against Hillingdon Borough Under 12s could have been a step too far but this was not the case in a very even game played a warm April evening.

To avoid further damage to the already worn pitch, the game was played with small goals positioned at the edge of each penalty area. Coach Roger Cherry invited three older boys to strengthen the home team. Colts, in their familiar 4-4-2 formation, started somewhat hesitantly obviously slightly nervous about playing a team with a year’s more experience of 11-a-side football. With Bradley Rowbotham joining Harvey Comely in the heart of the defence, the boys looked sold at the back, denying Hillingdon any early shooting opportunities. As the game settled down, Colts started to play with more authority and looked the more dangerous of the two sides with both Tom Weir and Liam Palfreeman worrying the opposition with their pace. In midfield Rhys Davies and Grady Cherry won a lot of ball but were unable to find the pass that would open up the Hillingdon defence. As the half drew to a close, Colts enjoyed greater possession and both Grady Cherry and Tyler Walker were unlucky not to score, each having good chances well saved by the Hillingdon keeper who was no doubt grateful to only be protecting the smaller goal. But it was Hillingdon who nearly took the lead on the stroke of half time. A neat cross from the right wing was flicked on by one of the strikers but fortunately for the Colts it drifted just wide of the far post.

The half time team talk was straight forward for Roger who told the boys to carry on playing as they had done and hopefully the goals would come. A slight change in formation saw Mitchell White introduced just in front of a back three to strength the defensive midfield. But as the second half started Hillingdon looked the more dangerous, although they were still unable to find a clear shot on goal. Colts, though, were not to be outdone and the boys fought their way back into the game and, as in the first half, they grew in confidence to look just as likely as the visitors to open the scoring in what was becoming an end-to-end battle. With all the Colts side working hard and playing with great determination it was inevitable that they started to tire as the half wore on. The age advantage started to be significant in the closing minutes with Hillingdon looking the stronger. But despite their fatigue Colts held on to claim a well-earned draw against the more experienced team, a result much to their credit.

This was an excellent fixture for the boys who have hopefully learned a great deal by playing football against older opposition. Many thanks to Tony for faultless job as referee and to the club for providing refreshments. After the game some of the older lads went out for kick about against Hillingdon and won 2-0, the highlight being the half time penalty shoot-out for the Under 11s which the Colts probably won although there so many penalties it was difficult for the reporter to keep the score.

Team: J Russell, A Martin, H Comely, L Williams, B Rowbotham, C Wood, G Cherry, T Walker, R Davies, L Palfreeman, T Weir. subs L Holt, J Roberson, M White

Kidlington

 Oxford City Colts 5 – Kidlington 3

This was the first time these teams have met this season and with Kidlington having only secured 15 points from their first 18 games Oxford were the clear favourites going into the game.

Oxford kicked off and immediately forced the pace of the game with the ball spread wide by Tyler Walker and the forwards running onto the long ball forward. A shot from outside the area was easily saved by the Kidlington keeper who took a quick kick to the half way line allowing Kidlington to counter attack but again the final shot on goal did not have enough pace and was easily saved by Joe Russell in the Oxford goal. It was now Oxfords turn to run at the Kidlington defence and a high looping shot by Bradley Rowbotham went just wide of the Kidlington post. The game now settled down to a battle of mid field with neither side making a significant breakthrough, Oxford were having most of the ball but the Kidlington defence were holding fast.

On 13 minutes Oxford won a free kick outside of the area on the right hand side. Bradley stepped up to take it and put a powerful kick into the 6 yard area where Tyler Walker caught it and looped it over the stranded Kidlington keeper to make it 1-0 to Oxford. On 20 minutes Tyler looked certain to score a second when a perfectly positioned pass found him in space with just the Kidlington keeper beat, however the keeper was quickly off his line and dived on the ball to make an excellent save snatching it was Tylers feet. Oxford were now dominating the game and pinning Kidlington back in their own area and the extra pressure was rewarded on 21 minutes when an excellent cross by Joe Roberson found Bradley in space and with the Kidlington keeper off his line he looped the ball into the net to make it 2-0.

Kidlington now started to play some better football and the long kicks from their keeper were catching the Oxford midfield unawares. On 23 minutes it was one of these long kicks that cleared the Oxford midfield and with the defense unable to clear a powerful shot from just outside the area was just too high for Joe Russell and Kidlington were back in the game at 2-1. Kidlington continued to put pressure on Oxford and the defence were not clearing the ball quickly enough and it could have been 2-2 a couple of minutes later but the short was just wide. The extra Kidlington pressure was to eventually pay off just before half time with another long and high shot from outside the area finding the back of the net. It was 2-2 at half time and Oxford were looking shaky at the back.

The half time team talk by Stuart seemed to wake the boys up and they came out very strong from the kick-off and should have been 3-2 up within a minute but Bradley’s shot rebounded off the bar. Two more Oxford attacks followed in quick succession with a shot blocked by the Kidlington keeper and a second excellent save from the feet of Tyler Walker keeping Kidlington in the game. The sustained pressure from Oxford seemed to take Kidlington by surprise and it was eventually rewarded 11 minutes into the half when a shot was dropped by the Kidlington keeper and volleyed into the net by Joe Roberson, 3-2 Oxford. The pressure on Kidlington continued and a couple of minutes later when a long throw by Cutis Adams was quickly crossed to Luke Holt who put a low and powerful shot beyond the reach of the keeper to make it 4-2 to Oxford. Kidling quickly counter attacked from a long kick out and out running the Oxford defence they made it 4-3 with 14 minutes left to play.

Oxford continued to dominate the game and Tyler had a third shot saved by the Kidlington keeper, who was having a great game and keeping his team in with a chance. Oxford were to secure all three points when Bradley’s shot from just outside the area was too strong for the keep, 5-3 with only 5 minutes left to play.

Kidlington made one last effort just before the end and looked like they had made it 5-4 only for the goal to be judged offside. It was 5-3 at the end and an excellent game of end-to-end football. Well done to both teams.

Thanks to Clive Roberson for refereeing.

Team: J Russell, A Martin, H Comley, L Williams, Mitchell, L Holt, J Roberson, T Walker (c), C Wood, B Rowbotham, D Denis,

Substitutes: C Adams, G Cherry, W Beechers

Man of the Match: First half: T Walker, Second half: J Roberson

Abingdon

Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report
9th March 2008

Oxford City Colts 8 - Abingdon 1

Looking at the result it might appear that Colts dominated this encounter with bottom of the table Abingdon, but for the majority of the first half this was certainly not the case. In the previous meeting between the two sides earlier in the season Colts twice came from behind before finally wining a tight game 4-3. For the return fixture Colts were missing a number of players through illness and injury and Coach Roger Cherry was force to make changes to the team. He started with 4-4-2 formation moving Brian Muinami to partner Wayne Beechers in attack.

On a bright and windy morning the game started slowly with neither team able to hang on to the ball. After a rather scrappy 15 minutes of football Abingdon forced the first corner of the game. Colts wasted several opportunities to clear allowing one of the Abingdon strikers to open the scoring with a header at the far post. This was the wake up call Colts needed and soon after the boys started to pass the ball around and attack the Abingdon goal. Charlie Wood caught the eye as he burst down the left flank on a number of occasions. Both Wayne and Brian were unlucky not to score as the Abingdon defence under increasing pressure held firm. But as the half progressed Colts’ domination increased and a deserved equaliser came after 25 minutes. Brian received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and with great skill beat a defender before slotting the ball into the corner of the net. Three minutes later Colts were ahead when Wayne ran on to a through ball and delicately chipped the advancing keeper.

Shortly after, the half time whistle sounded with Colts leading and in control of the game. All Roger needed to do was tell the boys to continuing playing as they had for the last few minutes of the half. The second period started with Colts playing with the wind behind them and after five minutes they increased their lead. Bradley Rowbotham’s well placed free kick picked out Grady Cherry who squared the ball for Harvey Comely to rifle home from close range. Shortly after Grady added to the lead as he chipped the ball over the Abingdon keeper from the left hand corner of the box.

Abingdon with their confidence draining away fought on bravely but struggled to cope with the Colts’ onslaught. Almost every attack led to another goal and Joe Roberson made it 5-1 as he helped the ball home from a cross which the defence failed to clear. With Colts now rampant, Bradley, who had an excellent game at the heart of the defence, came forward to shoot fiercely past the Abingdon keeper. With the game all but over, Roger gave keeper Joe Russell a few minutes on pitch and Joe duly obliged by seizing on a goalkeeping error at the other end to score his first league goal for Colts. And just as the rain started to fall and the crowd awaited the final whistle Charlie Wood scored Colts eighth goal to round off an excellent second half.

So after the two recent defeats, Colts returned to winning ways. As the boys have not scored as many goals as most of their rivals this season, the performance is particularly satisfying and will hopefully increase the boys’ confidence in front of goal. Many thanks to Stuart for an excellent job as referee and to Dave for running the line. Also thanks to Kelly for the post match refreshments.

Team: J Russell, A Martin, H Comely, C Adams, L Williams, L Holt, J Roberson, B Rowbotham, C Wood, B Muinami, W Beechers, sub G Cherry,

Man of the Match: 1st half C Wood, 2nd half G Cherry

Florence Park

Posted by Rob Martin on March 2, 2008, 5:07 pm
Florence Park 4 - Oxford City Colts 2

This was always going to be a tough match for Oxford with Florence Park sitting one place and 3 points ahead of them in the league and playing at home on a cold and blustery day.

It was Oxford who kicked off and quickly went on the attack with a long ball forward by Tyler Walker finding Grady Cherry running into the Florence Park area, however the shot was just over the bar and the perfect start was not to be. Oxford’s attack was quickly followed by a Florence Park counter attack and with Oxford being forced to play very deep in their own area they failed to clear the ball and on 2 minutes a neatly taken shot found the bottom corner and put Florence Park 1-0 up. Oxford were not down beat and from the kick-off immediately counter attacked and Grady Cherry with only the goal keeper to beat side footed the ball into the net to make it 1-1 on 3 minutes.

The game now started to settle into a pattern that saw Florence Park attacking with some good quality passing in mid-field and forcing Oxford to play deep in their own area with a lone Daniel Denis up front. The score could have been 2-1 to Florence Park when a shot was narrowly cleared over the bar by Luke Holt for a corner. Oxford were being forced to counter attack when they could but were unable to break through the Florence Park defense. On 15 minutes Florence Park did made it 2-1 when Oxford failed to clear from a very crowded 6 yard area. On 17 minutes Oxford’s manager Roger Cherry tried changing the shape of the team with Brian Muinami coming on for Grady Cherry and after 22 minutes Wayne Beechers came on for Liam Williams. However it was Florence Park who were getting most of the ball and on 26 minutes the extra possession and a poor clearance by Oxford was to see Florence Park go ahead 3-1 with an excellent taken shot from just inside the Oxford penalty area. From the kick off Oxford pushed forward to try and narrow the lead just before half time the extra pressure resulted in a well taken shot from Bradley Rowbotham to make it 3-2 at the break.

Florence Park started the second half and immediately pushed Oxford into a defensive formation, however this left them exposed to counter attack and with Wayne Beechers running at the Florence Park defense it could have been 3-3 if the shot had not been forced wide at the last minute. Neither side appeared able to dominate the game and it became a tight mid-field battle with counter attacks by both sides almost breaking through. The breakthrough finally came for Florence Park 10 minutes into the half when a couple of well executed passes found a striker unmarked in the Oxford area and a well taken shot made it 4-2 to Florence Park. Oxford were now forced to play more of an attacking game and this nearly cost them a few minutes later when a Florence Park shot was just over the bar. On 15 minutes Oxford pushed forward and when Joe Roberson looked to be through on the Florence Park goal only to be pushed off the ball a penalty looked certain but was not given. The appeals from the sidelines counted for nothing and at 4-2 down with only 15 minutes to go it didn’t look like it was going to be Oxfords’ day.

This missed opportunity to narrow the gap saw Oxford play some better attacking football and they almost broke through the Florence Park defense on a couple of occasions but the final shots were just not hitting the target. With about 10 minutes to a play a free-kick by Bradley Rowbotham was saved by the Florence Park keeper and a few minutes later a neat one-two between Wayne Beechers and Grady Cherry almost paid off but the shot was blocked and put out for a corner. The final few minutes saw Oxford and Florence Park counter attacking but neither side being able to break through. At the final whistle it was 4-2 to Littlemore and Oxford could only look back on what might have been. It was a very evenly matched game with Oxford stronger towards the end. With Oxford playing at home today the pressure was on them to secure 3 points from a team just above them in the league.

Marston kicked off and quickly pushed into all out attack. Playing into the wind Oxford were finding it difficult to clear their lines with every clearance appearing to drop at the feet of a Marston player. Oxford were being forced to soak up the early pressure and play deep in their own half. On 6 minutes Marston could have taken the lead but the shot came off the post to be caught by Reese in the Oxford goal. The long kick out gave Oxford an opportunity to counter attach but Wayne Beechers shot was into the side netting. The early pressure was all Marston with several corners in quick succession and Oxford being forced to clear the ball anyway they could. The pressure finally paid off for Marston on 9 minutes when a free kick was given just outside the area, the ball was curved in across the face of goal to find the head of an unmarked Marston striker, from almost point blank range he was never going to miss. It was 1-0 to Marston.

Oxford continued to struggle in the first half with attack after attack breaking through the their defense. On 16 minutes a second free kick was awarded to Marston just outside the area and with the wind behind them the shot was struck strongly and was too high for Reese, 2-0 to Marston. It was only after this goal that Oxford started to lift their heads and try passing the ball on the ground, it nearly paid off on 21 minutes when a free kick was awarded to Oxford just outside the Marston area, the shot by Bradley looked certain for the top corner when caught by the wind the ball rebounded off the post into the waiting arms of the Marston keeper. Oxford were now starting to play and a neat one/two between Wayne and Bradley created some space for a shot but only to find the side netting. Marston quickly counter attacked and with only the goalie to beat Marston looked certain to make it 3 nil. The safe hands of Reese was to deny them when at full stretch he managed to push the ball clear for a corner. The first half pressure was all Marston and Oxford were lucky to be only 2 down at the break.

A couple of changes at half time and readjusting the formation was to see Oxford pile the pressure on Marston from the kick off. Marston held secure and counter attacked down the left where their speed was a clear advantage but they were denied again by some excellent goal keeping from Reese. Oxford continued to try and pin Marston back in their own half intercepting poorly taken goal kicks and on 8 minutes a cross from Bradley found Curtis Adams in space but the shot was just wide. Marston again counter attacked and looked certain to break through on goal but for the quick thinking of Reese who was off his line only to foul the Marston striker just outside the area. The calls for a penalty from the Marston supporters were ignored by the referee and the resulting free kick was shot over the bar.

It was now Oxford’s turn to attack and on 15 minutes Brian Muinami was almost through on the Marston goal but his shot was blocked and went out for a corner. The pressure from Oxford was now relentless but the final shots were just not hitting the target, it didn’t look like it was going to their day. With time rapidly running out Oxford were pushing deeper and deeper into the Marston half and leaving themselves open to counter attack, this could have cost them dearly if Reese had not made a couple of excellent saves.

At full time it was Oxford 0, Marston 2. The early pressure from Marston and two excellently taken set pieces was the difference between the two teams on the day. Oxford’s performance in the second half was more like the team we have seen in recent games but the final touch was just not there today. Well done to both teams in what was a hard fought game.

Team: R Horwood, A Martin, H Comley, L Williams, Mitchell, Luke, G Cherry, J Roberson, C Wood, B Rowbotham, W Beechers.

Substitutes: C Adams, B Muinami, T Walker.

Man of the Match: First half: R Horwood, Second half: J Roberson

Littlemore

Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report
17th Feb 2008

Littlemore 2 - Oxford City Colts 5

With Littlemore having only secured 9 points from 18 games prior to today it was Oxford City who were the clear favourites going into the game. With this in mind coach Roger Cherry tried a new formation with top goal scorer Bradley Rowbotham playing in defence and Grady Cherry and Brian Muinami on the bench for the first half.

Littlemore kicked off but neither side seemed able to settle quickly, the Colts were clearly getting used to the new formation and Littlemore looked nervous of conceding an early goal. The early deadlock was nearly broken on 5 minutes when a through ball from Littlemore split the Oxford defence to put Littlemore through on goal, however the the pressure from a rapidly closing Rowbotham was enough to force the shot wide. This early defensive error was repeated on 8 minutes when a cross from the left wing found a Littlemore striker unmarked in the area and this time he made sure with a low shot into the corner, securing an early lead for Littlemore.
Oxford came out strong from the kick off with the ball finding Wayne Beechers on the left wing and his shot beating the Littlemore keeper on 9 minutes to level the score at 1-1. Following the equaliser Oxfords’ heads were up and they started to dominate a very crowded midfield, on 13 minutes they could have taken the lead but Tyler’s shot fell just wide of the post. The continuous pressure from Oxford saw another shot from Curtis Adams go wide on 15 minutes. The team’s frustration was now starting to show with several rushed shots and passes not finding their intended targets. A free kick on 25 minutes from just outside the area also went wide of the Littlemore post. The stalemate was broken a minute later by a wonderful looping shot from Wayne Beechers which beat the Littlemore keeper and found the top corner to make it 2-1. Littlemore responded strongly with their number 18 breaking down the left wing but unable to keep his shot on target. At the break Oxford led 2-1.

At half time Grady Cherry and Brian Muinami came on and both played up front. The extra height and strength was too much for Littlemore and after 2 minutes Brian ran onto a through ball and slotted it home with a clinical first touch, 3-1 to Oxford. He could have doubled his goal tally a minute later when another through ball almost put him in on goal. Oxford were now settling into more of a rhythm and Grady Cherry could have had two goals in the space of 5 minutes, one just over the bar and the second saved by the Littlemore keeper.

As the half progressed Oxford continued to dominate play but frustration was starting to show again with a number of passes not finding their intended target and several shots wide of the Littlemore post. The Littlemore keeper was seeing a lot of the ball and made several excellent saves to keep his teams chances alive. With about 15 minutes to play Littlemore counter attacked but Reese was quickly off his line to make the save. A second counter attack minutes later saw Littlemore through on goal but the offside decision favoured Oxford and the score remained 3-1. With only 10 minutes to play Grady Cherry picked up a through ball and neatly made it 4-1 to Oxford, the offside flag had gone up briefly but the referee overruled the decision and the goal counted. A couple of minutes later Harvey Comely picked the ball up from a free kick, out manoeuvred the Littlemore defence and with only the goalie to beat he made it 5-1 to Oxford. It could have been 6-1 a minute later it is wasn’t for another excellent save by the Littlemore keeper.

With only a minute to play Littlemore played the ball into a very crowed Oxford six yard box and Oxford’s failure to clear the ball was to cost them at the end, a late consolation goal for Littlemore and the final result was Littlemore 2 Oxford City Colts 5.

Team: R Horwood, L Williams, H Comely, A Martin, M White, T Walker, C Wood, C Adams, B Rowbotham, W Beechers, D Dennis. And so it was for Colts on this Sunday lunchtime fixture away at in-form Crowmarsh. However, with Colts unbeaten in the league since October, this game was always going to be a close affair. But in the end both sides will regret not have taken chances to win the game, although on balance it will perhaps be Crowmarsh who will feel more unhappy.

Recognising Crowmarsh’s strength, Colts' Coach Roger Cherry started with only two up front, preferring to play four across midfield. Luke Holt made his debut for the Colts, playing on the left side of midfield. The game started in bright sunshine with neither team taking an early advantage. Colts looked nervous lacking composure on the ball and they failed to play the passing style which has seen them perform so well in recent weeks. Indeed it was Crowmarsh who settled faster and soon the home side were well on top. They controlled and passed the ball well, allowing their attack the opportunity to pressurise the Colts’ goal. After 12 minutes Crowmarsh’s domination produced the opening goal. A well-placed through ball found one of their strikers who with quick feet rounded the keeper before placing his shot firmly into the net.

Following the early setback, Colts struggled to raise their game finding it difficult to hold onto the ball. Every time they cleared from defence the Crowmarsh midfield were first to the ball, creating another attack. Colts rarely put pressure on the Crowmarsh defence but on one of the few occasions they did get forward, it was predictably Bradley Rowbotham who helped the visitors back into the game. He stunned the Crowmarsh keeper with a riffling drive into the top corner to equalise on 20 minutes. However, there was precious little more for the Colts strikers in the rest of the half which was dominated by Crowmarsh. The home side re-took the lead a few minutes later after another good passing move opened up the Colts’ defence allowing one of the Crowmarsh strikers to slot the ball into the corner of the net unchallenged. Things could have been worse and it was only a good low save from keeper Joe Russell that prevented Crowmarsh from extending their lead from a corner just before the break.

Strong words were needed from Roger at half time to lift the boys who looked low on confidence. The team talk and a couple of tactical substitutions appeared to make a significant difference as the second half started. Colts competed for every ball, and although they still rushed some of their passes, they certainly let Crowmarsh know that they were in for difficult match. The reward for Colts’ hard work came with an equaliser on 43 minutes when from a poorly cleared corner, Bradley thumped another long range effort into the roof of the net. Crowmarsh responded with a number of swift attacking moves but at the centre of the Colts defence Harvey Comely looked assured and denied their strikers a good shooting opportunity.

With five minutes to go Bradley again forced his way through the Crowmarsh defence. His fiercely struck shot looked bound for the back of the net but the Crowmarsh keeper produced a spectacular save to deny Colts the lead. The ball came straight back to the other end of the pitch where, following a collision between striker and keeper, Crowmarsh appealed in vain for a penalty. And so shortly after with the final whistle the points were shared. This truly was a game of two halves. In the first we saw Colts without the spark that has led to an excellent run in the league in recent weeks, but after the break the boys played with far more conviction and were the equal of a quick and well-disciplined Crowmarsh team. Despite not playing well for the entire game, the boys deserve credit for getting a draw, twice coming from behind. Finally our thanks go to Clive for his enthusiasm as linesman.

Team: J Russell, L Williams, H Comely, A Martin, M White, G Cherry, T Walker, C Wood, L Holt, B Rowbotham, D Dennis. A bitterly cold wind blew across the Court Place Farm pitch making playing conditions difficult for both teams. Unperturbed by the freezing condition Colts’ supporters were once again out in numbers to cheer the boys on. Coach Roger Cherry elected to play with three up front, a formation which had proved so successful last time out.

Although Colts started with the wind behind them it was Florence Park, unbeaten since mid-December, who started the better having more than their fair share of possession in the first few minutes. However, it was not long before Colts settled and started to dominate with some excellent passing moves and an early double strike from Bradley Rowbotham had Florence Park very much on the back foot. His first on seven minutes came from a well-crafted move: Joe Roberson split the defence with a precise through ball to Wayne Beechers who crossed for Bradley to finish with a well struck shot. The second, only a minute later, followed a strong challenge from Mitchell White in midfield. The ball landed at Bradley’s feet and he went straight for goal, tucking the ball past the advancing keeper.

The remainder of the first half was played predominantly in the Florence Park half, the strong wind making it difficult for the away side to clear the ball. Wayne Beechers caught the eye with a number of skilful touches around the edge of the box. However, Colts struggled to turn their domination into further goals and they were forced to wait until the 28th minute to add to their lead. An optimistic ball into the area caught the wind and bounced high over the Florence Park keeper who was only able to parry the ball to Beechers who finished neatly. With a 3-0 lead and half time approaching Colts were guilty of a lapse in concentration which allowed Florence Park back into the game. Failing to clear an attack, the ball fell to one of the Florence Park strikers who steered his shot just inside the post.

At half time Roger told the boys they were in for a difficult second period playing into the gale force wind, but as long as they remained committed victory was likely. Unfortunately things did not go according to plan. Florence Park started strongly and with the wind at their backs pushed forward into the Colts half creating a number of chances. It was no surprise when they pulled the score back to 3-2 after five minutes; a close range shot giving Colts’ keeper Reece Horwood no chance. Florence park almost drew level a few minutes later but were denied by an excellent high save from Reece.

With Colts under continuous pressure Roger decided to strengthen the defence by moving Grady Cherry to centre back. His presence negated Florence Park’s attacking threat and as the half progressed Colts slowly worked their way back into the game. When they broke into the visitors’ half they always looked dangerous and after 50 minutes Colts restored their two goal advantage. Bradley drove another fierce shot across the keeper who was unable to prevent him from completing his hat trick.

Florence Park pushed forward in the last few minutes but were unable to open up the Colts’ defence who remained solid until the final whistle. So another well-fought victory against good opposition saw Colts move to within a point of Florence Park with a game in hand. Roger was obviously delighted with the team’s progress in recent weeks and after the match was very pleased to welcome new signing Luke Holt, son of Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Gary Holt, to the team. He will undoubtedly add strength to the Colts side who now look a very good bet for promotion. Our thanks once again go to Tony Beechers for refereeing, to Jason for running the line and Kelly and Sue for the post match food.

Team: J Russell, L Williams, H Comely, A Martin, M White, G Cherry, T Walker, C Wood, B Rowbotham, J Roberson, W Beechers. Not only had our opponents won all 15 of their games this season, they had scored 91 goals whilst conceding only 10. So despite some good performances in recent weeks, this was to be Colts stiffest challenge so far. Worse, Colts were without two key players; Isaac Moffat-Young returning to New Zealand after an excellent spell with the club and the dynamo Brian Muinami unavailable due to illness. Undaunted, Coach Roger Cherry remained positive and decided to start with an attacking formation, playing three up front.

Unlike recent weeks, the large crowd including many Colts’ fans were treated to some lovely whether, the wind having died down and the sun shining brightly. The game started at a tremendous pace with St Edmunds having more of the early play. Their confidence was obviously high as their well-disciplined team passed the ball accurately and attacked with pace. Indeed, things looked bad for Colts when after 10 minutes the referee awarded St Edmunds a penalty kick for a foul on the edge of the box. The St Edmunds’ penalty taker struck the ball cleanly to right of Colts' Joe Russell, but the keeper had guessed which way the ball was going and blocked the shot. This was to be the turning point of the match. St Edmunds, used to winning easily, appeared deflated, whilst Colts grew in confidence.

For the rest of the first half Colts dominated. They were consistently first to the loose ball in midfield with Grady Cherry, Tyler Walker and Charlie Wood all producing their best football. Now playing predominantly in the St Edmunds half, Colts looked the more likely to score, but the home side’s strong defence held firm. Daniel Dennis was a constant threat, holding up the ball well and always closing down the St Edmunds defence. His fellow strikers Bradley Rowbotham and Curtis Adams were both unlucky not to score. The best chance of the half fell to Colts on 18 minutes when the ball bounced back and forth between players in the St Edmunds goal area. But despite momentary defensive panic the ball failed to fall at the feet of one of Colts’ strikers.

For all of Colts attacking play, St Edmunds were still a threat when they broke. The pace and strength was apparent but with Mitchell White looking solid in front of the reliable back three of Liam Williams, Harvey Comely and Adam Martin, shooting opportunities for the league leaders were kept to a minimum. The first half ended with Colts again on the attack and Bradley again denied by the keeper’s efforts.

With the Colts playing well, Roger had little to say at half time and simply encouraged the boys to go out and win the game. Joe Roberson came on in right midfield, whilst Reece Horwood took over in goal. The second half, like the first, started at high tempo with St Edmunds perhaps slightly on top. But again Colts gradually improved and seized the advantage from the home side. The midfield all played with great determination: Joe Roberson was always a threat on the right, Tyler competed for every ball and had arguably his best game of the season, whilst Grady was strong and reliable on the left.

Despite their dominance, Colts were still failing to test the St Edmunds keeper. On 45 minutes Wayne Beechers was unlucky to see his fierce strike blocked by the defence and it started to look as if the well-organised defence would not be breached. However, they had not faced one of Bradley’s free kicks. With 10 minutes to go a foul just outside the box gave Colts the opportunity they needed. Up strode Bradley to thump the ball high into the St Edmunds net from all of 25 yards and give Colts a deserved lead.

The last few minutes were nail-biting. St Edmunds with their 100% record under threat pushed players forward. Numerous through balls tested the Colts defence but the boys rose to the challenge and tackled strongly to deny their opponents scoring opportunities. In the last five minutes St Edmunds threw everything at the Colts, winning a number of corners and free kicks. But the Colts were not to be beaten despite this onslaught and with the final whistle cheers rang out from both the boys and their jubilant band of supporters.

This was a great game to watch not simply because it saw the Colts extend their unbeaten run but for the quality shown by both sides. Colts demonstrated that when they show the desire and application they are match for anyone. Everyone in the lucky Amber Wealth Creation away kit had an excellent match. Hopefully the confidence gained from this victory will see the boys push on to a promotion spot. Finally, well done Roger for some excellent tactics and Stuart for running the line. Next week it’s second in the table Florence Park!

Team: J Russell, L Williams, H Comely, A Martin, M White, G Cherry, T Walker, C Wood, B Rowbotham, D Dennis, W Beechers. Threatening grey skies over Abingdon greeted the teams for this lunchtime kick off, but fortunately the rain stayed away. A strong wind blew across the rather heavy Saxton pitch which, given the recent weather, was in reasonable condition.

Coach Roger Cherry decided to start with 3-1-4-2 formation with Mitchell White playing just in front of the back three. Colts looked very assured with this shape and started the game at high tempo. Playing in their lucky black and white Amber Wealth Creation sponsored shirts, Colts were first to almost every ball and with accurate passing through the midfield a number of scoring opportunities resulted. Despite this early domination, once in the final third, Colts shooting failed to trouble the Saxton keeper. Bradley Rowbotham was, though, unlucky not to open the scoring on 20 minutes when his shot hit the inside of the post and ran along the goal line before being cleared and as half time approached, it looked like the teams would go in level. However, just before the break a thumping drive from Bradley went into the net off the underside of the bar giving the goalkeeper no chance of preventing Colts taking a deserved lead.

This week the half time talk was much calmer: Roger and Stuart simply told the boys to continue their excellent passing football and keep the pressure on the Saxton defence. And this is exactly what they did. With some fresh legs in midfield the boys continued to dominate and they created a number of scoring chances. However, as in previous matches Colts again failed to turn this pressure into goals. The Saxton keeper must take credit for some impressive saves although more composure in front of goal from our attack would arguably have increased Colts’ lead.

With only a one-goal advantage, Saxton were always capable of getting back into the match and as the second half progressed they started to create a few attacking chances themselves. Fortunately Colts responded and lifted their own game. Another excellent passing move led to their second goal. Grady Cherry took the ball down the left and crossed for Bradley to bury the ball in the corner of net leaving the keeper helpless. In the final few minutes Saxton played their best football of the match but the Colts’ defence held firm with Adam Martin, Harvey Comely and Liam Williams all playing well.

So another victory for the Colts to add to their win over Wheatley last week. Credit must go to Saxton for a competitive match played in a good spirit but Colts’ greater desire for the ball and their excellent passing proved to be the difference between the two sides. If the boys continue in this vein they will surely move up the table and be in with an excellent chance of promotion come the end of the season. Finally thanks to Clive for a faultless performance as linesman.

Team: J Russell (R Horwood HT), L Williams, H Comely, A Martin, M White (G Cherry 50), I Moffat-Young (B Muinami HT), G Cherry (J Roberson HT), T Walker (G Cherry 50), C Adams (C Wood HT), B Rowbotham, D Dennis (W Beechers HT) subs R Horwood, B Muinami, J Roberson, C Wood, W Beechers

Wheatley

Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report – ‘Selection Box’
6th January 2008
Oxford City Colts 3 Wheatley 1
Mince Pies, Christmas Pudding, Turkey, Stuffing, Roger’s Selection Box, Chocolate Log, Fizzy Drinks……………would the excesses of Christmas have a negative impact on the boys’ performance????
Well, for the first half it certainly seemed to be the case!
A bright, glorious, fresh morning greeted all for the first game of 2008; though most parents were well wrapped up and trying to shake off the winter bug that has affected so many.
A rather scrappy first 10 minutes saw Wheatley slowly start to get on top. After missing two gilt-edge chances, the third that came along was headed into the back of the net, after a rebound off the cross-bar, to give Wheatley a 15th minute lead.
Roger was not impressed! Words of encouragement were given to all concerned and slowly Colts started to have a bit more of the play. Their first real effort on goal saw a long-range shot by Brian Muinami easily dealt with by the opposing keeper. Roger made a couple of first-half substitutions to try and improve things. Bradley Rowbotham was giving his all for the team and had one excellent volley that narrowly cleared the bar.
The half-time whistle could not come quickly enough for Colts who were quite fortunate only to be one down at the break. Roger and Stuart were going to have to earn their money during the team talk as the Colts never really got going in that half. Was Roger regretting handing out that Selection Box??!!

A change of formation saw the reliable Wayne Beechers start up front with Bradley. Joe Roberson came on into midfield.
Whatever the management team had said at half-time certainly seemed to have the desired effect. Wayne was an inspired change and he was soon causing the Wheatley defence plenty of problems. Bradley was very unlucky to see a shot hit the post and rebound to safety. Other chances were created as Colts started to get a grip of the match for the first time. In the 43rd minute Colts equalised. After a 50:50 clash with the Wheatley keeper, Wayne was the quickest to react and knock home Colts’ first goal of 2008. The Wheatley keeper required quite lengthy treatment after the clash but there was never any hint of a foul on him.
With Christmas delights now firmly behind them Colts started to get a grip of the game and were awarded a penalty after a blatant handball in the box. After missing their last penalty, Bradley was given the responsibility of putting Colts ahead. However, his rather weak effort was saved by the Wheatley keeper. But Referee Tony Beechers – who had a fine game – correctly spotted encroachment by several Wheatley players. Bradley’s second effort was expertly dispatched into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
To their credit Wheatley did not give up and kept on trying to seek an equaliser. Colts too were pushing forward to try and secure the game. With two minutes to go, after good work by Grady Cherry and Bradley, a low cross was gleefully hit home at the far post by Charlie Woods. The three points were now secure. Certainly a game ‘of two halves’.

Many thanks to Tony for being Referee and Jason for running the line.

Attendance: 59 (includes 1 dog)
Team: R Horwood, H Comely, M White, A Martin, W Beechers, C Adams, G Cherry, B Muinami, D Dennis, B Rowbotham, T Walker. Unlike previous weeks, the sun was shinning on this crisp winter’s morning much to the relief of the fans and despite the recent heavy rain the Marston pitch was in good condition. Coach Roger Cherry, suffering from flu, made a few changes to the team pushing the speedy Brian Muinami into midfield. Colts started the game well with the midfield competing strongly for the ball and the defence looking solid against a fast Marston attack. Colts distribution was much improved on recent weeks and they used both wings well. This tactic proved effective when in the 18th minute Isaac Moffat-Young whipped in an excellent cross from the right and Daniel Dennis moved in front of his marker to steer the ball past the helpless Marston keeper.

Marston looked a little fragile at the back as Colts continued to press forward and their second goal on 24 minutes came from well judged cross from the left wing by Curtis Adams. This time it was Bradley Rowbotham who finished neatly. With Marston looking rattled Bradley added to their misery a minute later with a well struck shot from outside the box to give Colts a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Colts, Marston then started to play and in the last five minutes of the first half they pulled two goals back. Both came from Colts’ failure to clear the ball from their own penalty area handing possession back to Marston just outside the box. The first was a lob into the top of the goal; the second a fiercely stuck shot that keeper Joe Russell was unhappy not to have blocked.

So at half time despite being a goal up, the boys’ morale had dropped. Roger switched things around bringing the versatile Joe Roberson on up front and telling the boys that they must score the next goal. Spirits seemed a little higher as Colts started the second half but unfortunately it was Marston who scored next. Another poor clearance handed the ball to Marston in a dangerous position. Once again they used the ball well spreading it across the front line before executing a clinical finish.

Having given up a three goal lead it would have been easy to for Colts’ heads to have dropped but once again the boys raised their game and pushed forward. Their reward came when Isaac Moffat-Young’s shot hit the bar only to rebound to Joe Roberson who headed Colts back into the lead. The boys were extremely unlucky not to increase their lead a few minutes later when Charlie Wood’s header hit the post a nearly crossed the line. With a victory against the local rivals looking more than possible, Colts’ football started to loose its fluency. They played too many poor passes and resorted to simply hitting the ball back to the opposition. So it was no surprise when Marston scored the last goal to earn a deserved draw. This time a goalmouth scramble landed at the feet of one the Marston strikers who put his shot just inside the far post. In the final minute Marston could have taken all three points when they shot over the bar from close range.

So in the end a draw was probably a fair result, although both teams probably felt they could have won. Colts looked very good at times and used both wings well. A little more composure in defence and midfield and 2008 has every possibility of being a successful year. Many thanks must go to Roger and Stuart for their work both today and throughout the year. Thanks also to Tony and Clive for running the line, sometimes in the face of strong criticism from the Marston fans.

Team: J Russell, H Comely, A Martin, W Beechers, L Williams, I Moffat-Young, B Muinami, G Cherry, C Adams, D Dennis, B Rowbotham. Heavy rain during the week had left the Court Place Farm pitch very boggy and a further downpour just before kick off created a number of puddles in both penalty areas.

Colts started as underdogs against a strong free-scoring Quarry team from the top division of the Oxford Mail League. Coach Roger Cherry opted for the familiar 4-4-2 formation that had worked so well against Saxton in the last round. Following last week’s tactical training session and playing the first half with the wind and rain behind them, Colts started well and did not appear intimidated by the higher league opposition. The defence looked solid and well organised with Wayne Beechers combining particularly well with the midfield. However, in the final third the boys were unable to break down the strong Quarry defence.

After a fairly even opening to the game, Quarry took the lead midway through the first half. An attack down the left wing led to a cross the centre forward who received the ball with his back to goal. He turned quickly and, before a challenge came in from the Colts’ defence, he fired a fierce shot into the roof of the net.

Colts responded well to this setback competing more strongly and they were soon rewarded with an equaliser. Bradley Rowbotham’s determined run and cross from the right wing was only parried by the Quarry goalkeeper and Joe Roberson was on hand to tuck the ball away. Having levelled the match, Colts let the initiative slip with Quarry dominating the last few minutes of the half. They retook the lead shortly before the break with another powerful run and sot from their main striker.

So at half time Colts were possibly a little unfortunate to be behind. Roger and Stuart encouraged the boys to raise their game for the second half telling them that they were still more than capable of winning. The wind and rain eased at the beginning of the second half and the game took on a real cup tie atmosphere. It was classic end to end football with both sides creating a number of chances. The best fell to Quarry who were denied by an excellent save from Reece Horwood. As the game progressed, Quarry showed why they are in the top division as they started to dominate in midfield and create a number of chances. They were prevented from scoring by a brave performance form the Colts defence with Adam Martin and Harvey Comely making a number of well-timed tackles. However, the pressure finally told with ten minutes to go as Quarry scored following a poor clearance from a goal kick.

Colts’ heads did not drop and for the remainder of the game they looked the better side. As they pushed forward and pressured the Quarry goal, the visitors made a number of defensive errors. Bradley Rowbotham was a constant threat and managed to pull a goal back for the Colts with just a few minutes left setting up an exciting conclusion to the game. The final minutes were played out in hail storm with Colts pushing hard for an equaliser. However, it was not to be as the Quarry defence held firm to hang on to a victory and a place in the next round.

So in the end Colts can be proud of their efforts and consider themselves a little unlucky not to have taken anything from a close match against higher league opposition. Our thanks must go to Tony Beechers for an excellent performance as referee in such dismal conditions and, once again, to Jason for running the line. Special thanks to Jane Wood for the much needed after-match hotdogs.

Team: J Russell, H Comely, B Muinami, A Martin, W Beechers, L Williams, G Cherry, J Roberson, C Adams, T Walker, D Dennis, Subs: R Horwood, M White, C Wood, I Moffat-Young, B Rowbotham.

Man of the Match: 1st half W Beechers, 2nd half A Martin

Benson

Oxford City Colts U11 Match Report
25th November 2007

Oxford City Colts 1 – Benson 2

Despite a dramatic improvement in the weather, Colts performance on this pleasant autumnal morning was, like England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008, best forgotten. Gone were last week’s biting wind and rain and pleasant sunshine greeted the players and supporters for the return fixture against Benson. The previous match at Benson, the first of the season, had been a close affair with Colts twice coming from behind to win 3-2. With home advantage, confidence was high that Colts could do the double over a well-organised but inconsistent Benson team.

Coach Roger Cherry started with almost the same team who had played well to beat Littlemore last week. However, it was to be one of those Sunday morning fixtures when Colts never really got going. The boys were hesitant in midfield allowing Benson too much time to control and distribute the ball and it was no surprise when the opposition took the lead after only five minutes. A through ball was pounced upon by a Benson striker who shot cleanly into the corner of the net.

This set back, and plenty of encouragement from Roger, saw the Colts raise their game. For the remainder of the first half they had the lion’s share of possession and Liam Williams was unlucky not to equalise when his shot was cleared off the line. The midfield started to look a little more assured and Harvey Comely once again impressed on the right side of defence.

Things started to look much better after twenty minutes when Colts were awarded a penalty for handball. Adam Martin strode up confidently only to see his shot saved by the impressive Benson keeper. The Benson goalie again came to his side’s rescue when heroically saving an impressive strike from Joe Roberson. However, Colts were soon level thanks to another goal straight from a corner; this week it was Bradley Rowbotham with the well-taken kick.

So at half time the teams were level with Roger impressing upon the boys that they could win if they were more competitive. But his words fell on deaf ears as Colts made heavy weather of the second half. Again they sat back and gave Benson too much time on the ball and when Colts did win possession their passing was not up to its usual standard. Benson always looked threatening on the break and after 45 minutes another through ball allowed the Benson centre forward to run through the middle and strike a clean shot into the Colts net.

For the final quarter Colts were once again chasing the game, but unlike previous matches when they have played some excellent football there was to be no come back. Benson’s greater determination and desire left Colts resorting to shooting from distance which failed to trouble the opposition’s keeper. In the end Benson probably deserved their victory and Colts must now look forward to next week’s cup tie against local rivals Quarry. Hopefully this defeat to Benson will eliminate any complacency and make Colts more determined to progress in the Oxford Mail Cup. Many thanks to Tony Beechers for refereeing, Clive for running the line and Sue for the after match refreshments.

Team: R Horwood, H Comely, M White, A Martin, W Beechers, L Williams, G Cherry, J Roberson, I Moffat-Young, T Walker, B Rowbotham. The weather at Court Place Farm was dreadful; the heavy unrelenting rain and biting wind forcing some spectators back into the clubhouse leaving the brave and possibly more foolhardy to endure the whole match.

Coach Roger Cherry started with a strong side for the first half in which Colts played into the wind. However, they failed to dominate against a Littlemore team who had won only one of their matches so far this season. Possibly because of the abysmal conditions, both sides looked hesitant in midfield and Colts were often guilty of failing to be first to the ball. When they did move the ball forward, Colts’ striker Bradley Rowbotham looked dangerous and was unlucky not to score on couple of occasions; both shots beating both the Littlemore keeper and unfortunately, the far post.

Colts started to get on top as the first half drew to a close and their greater possession was rewarded with an excellent goal direct from an Isaac Moffat-Young corner. His well-struck kick evaded both attack and defence, creeping in at the far post. Littlemore tried to respond but were unable to breach the Colts' defence. Mitchell White played with great authority breaking down a number of Littlemore attacks and keeper Reece Horwood looked particularly convincing on a wretched day for goalkeeping.

At half time Roger swapped things around in an effort to prevent the boys from getting too cold. Playing with the wind and rain behind them Colts dominated the early part of the second half with Joe Roberson very busy in midfield. However, despite having more of the ball, they were unable to increase their lead until well into the second period. A lovely move down the right saw Charlie Wood deliver an excellent cross which Bradley buried in the back of the Littlemore net. With the opposition down to ten men because of injury, Colts controlled the rest of the match. They added to their lead through a well-struck shot from Grady Cherry giving the boys a deserved 3-0 winning margin. Both players and spectators were pleased to hear the final whistle just a few minutes later with everyone heading straight for the warmth of the clubhouse.

So a good result on what was a miserable day. Credit should go to Littlemore who have some excellent young players who worked hard throughout the match. Many thanks to the referee who kept things moving in difficult conditions and to Tony Beechers for running the line. Also special thanks to Kelly for providing some much needed hot food after the game.

Team: R Horwood, H Comely, M White, A Martin, W Beechers, L Williams, G Cherry, I Moffat-Young, C Adams, T Walker, B Rowbotham. Both teams started the day on 16 points and both needed a win to stay in contention for promotion. The weather was not good as heavy rain started to fall only an hour before kick off and so there was a distinct prospect of another scrappy game. Fortunately as the teams warmed up, much to the delight of the fans, the rain lifted.

Colts started the game strongly and immediately went on the attack. Crowmarsh failed to cope with the early pressure and within two minutes Colts took the lead. A cross from the right found its way to Isaac Moffat-Young who skilfully put the ball into the roof of the net giving the keeper no chance. This early set back was the wake up call needed by the Crowmarsh team who then showed why they are second top scorers in the league. They used the ball well in midfield putting the Colts’ defence under pressure. After 10 minutes an accurate through ball allowed the Crowmarsh attack to get behind the Colts defence. A neat cross was easily tucked into the Colts’ net at the far post. Worse was to follow as Crowmarsh took the lead from an impressive finish following another pass that opened up the Colts defence. It looked as if Crowmarsh might dominate but the Colts tried hard to fight their way back into the match. At times Colts looked the better side although Crowmarsh always looked dangerous on the break and maintained their lead at the break.

Coach Roger Cherry had some encouraging words at half time telling the boys that they were capable of winning if they raised their game. Unfortunately it was Crowmarsh who started the second half the stronger and within minutes the ball was again in the back of the Colts’ net. Although disallowed for offside it was a warning of what was to follow. Colts defence were not playing with their usual authority and Crowmarsh soon increased their lead to three goals. First a weak goal kick was picked up by the one of the Crowmarsh players who blasted the ball into the corner of the net. Shortly after, another through ball saw a composed finish as the Crowmarsh striker took the ball around the keeper before hammering home an unstoppable shot.

At 4-1 down with only a quarter of the match to go Colts looked beaten. Roger Cherry switched the players around and at once things improved. Bradley Rowbotham looked a threat in attack and his persistence paid off with a goal from looping shot over the Crowmarsh keeper. Sensing they still had a chance Colts threw everything into attack and once again Bradley forced the ball into the net after some indecision in the Crowmarsh defence. The unlikely turn around continued a few minutes later as Charlie Wood equalised, squeezing the ball home at the near post. The game felt more like a cup tie as both teams went for the win and although Crowmarsh still looked dangerous on the counter attack, their through balls were not running to feet. As the end of game approached and a draw looked likely, Colts threaded a pass to Daniel Dennis on the edge of the Crowmarsh box. With his back to goal he turned superbly before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner of the Crowmarsh net giving Colts what had appeared some 15 minutes earlier an unlikely win. Delight for the home fans and despair for the visitors.

This was an excellent result for the Colts in a very close and exciting game. Full credit must go to Crowmarsh who played well and will be disappointed to go home empty handed. Cup fever seemed to have gripped the Colts’ fans, as a large travelling contingent made the short trip to South Abingdon.
Coach Roger Cherry opted for a starting line-up that surprisingly didn’t include Bradley Rowbotham or Grady Cherry, both of whom were left to ‘warm the bench’.
Wearing the lucky black-and-white stripes of the away kit – sponsored by Amber Wealth Creations – the Colts were looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season last week.

The first five minutes were a very scrappy affair with neither side dominating. But from their first meaningful attack, Saxton whipped in a cross from the left which was missed by the Colts’ defence, but not by the lurking Saxton forward who calmly put his side ahead.
It took Colts 15 minutes to win their first corner, from which Isaac
Moffat-Young shot over the bar.
Colts then had to make an early substitution that saw Liam Williams go off, with what looked like a throat injury, to be replaced by Curtis Adams.
The rest of the half saw plenty of effort and endeavour from the Colts without really creating any real chances. Though the defence was as mean as ever and restricted Saxton to a few half-chances, that keeper Joe Russell dealt with comfortably. Roger must have been impressed with Harvey Comley, who had an impressive half in his new position of right-back.
Rather strangely the referee seemed to blow the half-time whistle 5 minutes early to signal the end of a very tight 25 minutes.

Roger’s half-time team talk did not involve any tea cup throwing, but encouragement and praise for all involved in the first half.
Four changes were made at half time to try and keep their dreams of Wembley alive.

It soon became evident that whatever Roger had said at half-time, certainly had the desired effect as Colts had two great chances to get back on level terms within minutes of the restart.
But the equalizer was not long in coming. From their first corner the ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Mitchell White hit an unstoppable volley in to the roof of the net. Certainly a contender for goal of the season!

With confidence and belief now flowing through the team, Colts took a complete hold of the game and were close to a second through a Bradley Rowbotham free-kick and a Tyler Walker effort. The away support sensed a second goal was not too far away and they were not to be disappointed. A cross from Curtis Adams saw the Saxton goalie only managing to parry the ball away, which was seized on instantly by Bradley who lashed the ball home to put the Colts ahead.
Saxton were by no means finished and had a great chance to equalise shortly after the Colts’ second, but only wayward finishing prevented it from happening.

Colts had further chances to seal the game through Grady Cherry and Tyler, but these went begging. In one alarming moment for Colts, when it seemed that Saxton were outnumbering the defence, Adam Martin produced a timely interception, reminiscent of the late Bobby Moore, to break up the attack.

With minutes remaining Colts grabbed the decisive third that ensured they will be in the hat for the next round draw. A good passing movement between Bradley and Tyler saw the latter calmly stroking the ball home to confirm victory.

The final whistle signalled great scenes of joy by player’s and fans. Let’s hope the draw is favourable and a lucrative home draw against a local rival can be achieved.
Many thanks to Jason for running the line.

Attendance: 52 (includes 2 dogs)

Team: J Russell, H Comely, M White, A Martin, W Beechers, L Williams, B Muinami, I Moffat-Young, J Roberson, D Dennis, T Walker. The visitors to Court Place Farm were top of the table St Edmunds but in driving rain and with a stiff breeze both teams struggled to play their best football.

Having won the toss and deciding to play downwind in their lucky Amber Wealth Creations sponsored black and white away kit, Colts started brightly. The midfield competed strongly creating a number of attacking opportunities. In defence, the back four continued to look strong despite a pacey opposition attack. St Edmunds always looked dangerous running on to a number of well placed through balls and it was a sign of things to come when, after ten minutes, they found the back of the Colts net only for their striker to be penalised for offside.

St Edmunds has the meanest defence in the league having conceded only eight goals in their previous eight games. However, it was Colts who took the lead on 20 minutes. A free kick from the right edge of the penalty area passed through a crowd of players before arriving at Tyler Walker’s feet and he easily slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Colts, with their confidence increasing, continued to push forward, Curtis Adams looking especially strong in the left of midfield. But with St Edmunds always looking fast on the break, Colts, needed to use the advantage of the wind to create more scoring chances before the break. Unfortunately despite their best efforts they were unable to increase their lead. They paid the price after 20 minutes when some poor defending let St Edmunds back into the game. Having failed to clear a corner, the ball found its way to one of the St Edmunds strikers who tucked the ball neatly into the corner from close range to level the score at 1-1.

During the break Coach Roger Cherry changed the side around for what was to be a difficult second half playing into the wind and rain. Predictably St Edmunds started the second half strongly but the Colts defence, who record is second only to their opponents, held firm. Harvey Comely and Isaac Moffat-Young both impressed on the right side. However, with the weather now in their favour, St Edmunds looked increasingly threatening and midway through the half another through ball from the midfield led to an unstoppable shot giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Colts remained in the game until the closing minutes but were unable to find a decisive pass with which to open up the St Edmunds defence. Shortly before the final whistle St Edmunds sealed their victory with a third goal from close range. So the unbeaten run comes to an end against the league leaders, although on another day and in better conditions Colts might have had better fortune. Many thanks to Clive for an excellent performance as referee and to Jason for running the line.

Team: J Russell, M White, C Adams, A Martin, B Muinami, W Beechers, L Williams, G Cherry, B Rowbotham, H Comely, T Walker. A bitterly cold wind blew across the Court Place Farm pitch making playing conditions difficult for both teams. Unperturbed by the freezing condition Colts supporters were once again out in numbers to cheer the boys on.

The ball landed at Bradleys feet and he went straight for goal, tucking the ball past the advancing keeper.

It was no surprise when they pulled the score back to 3-2 after five minutes; a close range shot giving Colts keeper Reece Horwood no chance. Florence park almost drew level a few minutes later but were denied by an excellent high save from Reece.

With Colts under continuous pressure Roger decided to strengthen the defence by moving Grady Cherry to centre back. His presence negated Florence Parks attacking threat and as the half progressed Colts slowly worked their way back into the game. When they broke into the visitors half they always looked dangerous and after 50 minutes Colts restored their two goal advantage. Bradley drove another fierce shot across the keeper who was unable to prevent him from completing his hat trick.

Florence Park pushed forward in the last few minutes but were unable to open up the Colts defence who remained solid until the final whistle. So another well-fought victory against good opposition saw Colts move to within a point of Florence Park with a game in hand. Roger was obviously delighted with the teams progress in recent weeks and after the match was very pleased to welcome new signing Luke Holt, son of Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Gary Holt, to the team.

There was a debut for Isaac Moffat-Young, but otherwise Coach Roger Cherry continued with the same formation that had performed so well in recent matches.

Colts started the first half well, attacking with excellent passing moves combined with the occasional long ball for the strikers to chase. However, the Saxton defence were strong and limited the number of shooting opportunities for the Colts. Saxton were also quick to break and the speed and organisation of the Colts defence was put to the test on a number of occasions.

Just as it appeared that the first half would end goalless, Saxton broke through the Colts defence and a strong shot found the back of the net. Going a goal down made the Colts raise their game and just two minutes later, on the stroke of half-time, Joe Roberson scored from a corner. Having spent so much time in training working on set pieces it was encouraging to see the boys using these routines to such good effect in a match.

For the second half Roger Cherry switched to a more attacking formation and immediately Colts looked more threatening. Saxton, though, are a good side and still looked dangerous on the break especially with the Colts pushing forward in search of a winning goal. Colts’ reward came with 10 minutes to go when a through ball hit the arm of a Saxton defender in the penalty area. The reliable Adam Martin stepped up and fearlessly struck the spot kick into the roof of the net to give Colts the lead.

To their credit Saxton heads did not go down and they pressed hard for an equaliser. Their effort was rewarded three minutes from time with a close range shot giving them a deserved draw. This was another excellent game of football to watch played by two well-matched teams. With three victories on the road already, the prospect of another match away fixture was not daunting for the boys whose confidence has increased with every match. Coach Roger Cherry picked a more attacking side, pushing Bradley Rowbotham into midfield. This decision appeared extremely shrewd when, after less than a minute, Bradley broke clear of the Wheatley defence and drilled a shot low into the corner of the net to give Colts a very early lead. Things looked even better just 8 minutes later when Bradley fired a fierce shot into the top of the Wheatley goal to put Colts 2-0 up.

Wheatley to their credit did not lose heart after this early onslaught and slowly came back into the game. Their pacey attack was soon finding gaps in the Colts defence and kept Joe Russell busy in the Colts goal. After 17 minutes another break allowed the Wheatley attack to chip the onrushing Russell and despite a brave effort to clear the ball off the line by Wayne Beeches, Wheatley were back in the match at 2-1. The rest of the first half was end to end football with both goalkeepers busy. On the stroke of halftime a magnificent passing move down the left wing saw Bradley through on goal and another thumping shot gave him his hat-trick just before the break.

Credit must be given to Wheatley who started the second half strongly. Brian Muinami playing slightly deeper in defence ran tirelessly to keep their scoring opportunities to a minimum. But it was Colts who scored next. Bradley dribbled through the Wheatley defence only to be fouled before he could shoot. Referee Clive Roberson pointed straight to the spot and Adam Martin powered the kick over the Wheatley keeper to give Colts the comfort of a 4-1 lead.

Perhaps thinking the game won, Colts let a determined and well-organised Wheatley team back into the match with two goals; both high shots hit from outside the area. Just as it started to look like Wheatley could snatch a point, Mitchell White sent a through ball to Grady Cherry who buried the ball in the back of Wheatley net. To further ease the stress amongst the Colts fans, with five minutes to go Tyler Walker scored after a long solo run. Colts then switched off for the last few minutes allowing Wheatley to score a fourth just before the final whistle.

This was another excellent game to watch played by two well-matched teams. Many thanks to Clive for an excellent performance as referee (surely a certainty for the next match!) and to Jason and Dave for running the line.

Team: J Russell, M White (L Williams H/T, M White 45), A Martin, B Muinami, W Beechers, H Comely, G Cherry, B Rowbotham, T Walker, C Adams (C Woods H/T), D Dennis (J Roberson H/T) subs J Roberson, C Woods, L Williams

Man of the Match: 1st half J Russell, 2nd half M White

Abingdon

Abingdon 2 - Oxford City Colts 3

With three consecutive victories to start the season, Colts travelled to Abingdon in search of another win. Having played so well in previous weeks, Coach Roger Cherry had few selection problems. The team lined up in a similar way to previous matches with Joe Roberson starting in front of the back four for the unwell Mitchell White. Abingdon had experienced a difficult start to the season and so the Colts were full of confidence about maintaining their 100% record.

Unfortunately the first half did not go according to plan. Although Colts played some attractive passing football, they failed to create many clear cut scoring opportunities; the ball never seeming to fall to one of the strikers. Frustration set in as the boys struggled to turn their increased share of the ball into goals and as the half progressed Abingdon started to get more possession. With increasing confidence they pressed forward winning a free kick just outside the Colts penalty area. A well struck shot sailed high into the Colts goal to give Abingdon the lead somewhat against the run of play.

However, this season Colts have learnt to fight back after going behind. Despite the early set back they kept trying to play the passing game that has worked well in previous matches and three minutes before the break their efforts were rewarded. An Abingdon corner was cleared and the ball knocked forward to Harvey Comely. He controlled the ball and ran through the Abingdon defence before placing the ball in the bottom corner of the goal to give Colts a deserved equaliser.

With only a few minutes before half time it was hoped that the boys would not lose concentration but unfortunately within two minutes Abingdon scored again after a through ball was chipped over the advancing Joe Russell. So having worked hard to get back on level terms Colts went in at half time 2-1 down. A stern half time team talk made the boys realise that they needed to work harder to win.

Roger moved Bradley Rowbotham forward in the second half, playing with just three at the back. He and Daniel Dennis linked well causing the Abingdon defence constant problems. It was no surprise when ten minutes into the second half the pair combined well as Bradley tucked home the equaliser. However, Abingdon were far from finished and broke well on several occasions forcing some excellent saves from Reece Horwood. Colts went in search of a winning goal and went close a number of times. Inevitably it was Bradley who scored the winner with ten minutes to go, finishing off another excellent passing move.

So Colts maintain their 100% record but only just. Possibly a little overconfident at the start of the match, the boys soon realised that they don’t just need to turn up to win games. With some difficult fixtures coming up, they will have to work hard to continue their excellent start to the season.

Team: J Russell, A Martin, B Rowbotham, B Muinami, W Beechers, J Roberson, L Williams, G Cherry, H Comley, C Wood, T Walker subs R Horwood, D Dennis, C Adams

Man of the Match: 1st half H Comely, 2nd half D Dennis

Horspath

Oxford City Colts 4 – Horspath 1

Following away wins at Benson and Didcot, this was our first home league match of the season. A lunchtime start ensured nobody was late and everyone was wide awake on a blustery late summer’s day. Still new to 11-a-side football, Colts were full of confidence after their recent away success and so Coach Roger Cherry continued with the boys playing in positions which had worked well in previous matches.

Colts started strongly and immediately threatened the Horspath goal. After only four minutes they took the lead through Liam Williams. Following a cross from the left the chance to shoot appeared to have gone when Liam picked up the ball on the right hand edge of the box, beat a defender and drilled it into the far corner. Rather than sitting back on their lead, Colts continued to press, winning numerous corners and after 10 minutes they scored again. A well worked corner from the left was turned in by Harvey Comely to double the lead.

The rest of the first half was dominated by the Colts as Horspath, playing into a strong wind, struggled to get the ball out of their own half. When they did, the Colts defence, who worked well together, ensured the ball went straight back. The pressure was converted into a third goal just before the break when a poor clearance came to the feet of Adam Martin just outside the penalty area. With no-one to pass to he struck a crisp shot into the top right hand corner past the helpless Horspath keeper. Another excellent goal to thrill the home supporters.

At half time the team was rotated with Roger bringing on all the substitutes. Horspath, now playing with the wind, looked more dangerous but were still unable to breach the solid Colts defence. With Horspath coming more into the game the Colts midfield had to work hard to win possession and it was encouraging to see the boys fighting to get first to the ball. A number of fine passing moves helped restore Colts dominance and once again pin Horspath back in their own half.

Half way through the second period Colts were awarded a free kick 25 yards from the Horspath goal on the left hand side. A clean strike from Bradley Rowbotham was too good for both the onrushing Colts attack and the Horspath defence ending up in the back of the net. Another fantastic goal and yet another candidate for goal of the season.

In the last five minutes a tiring Colts defence lost concentration. A cross from the right flicked Bradley’s boot and gave Reece Horwood no chance to stop Horspath scoring a consolation goal. Overall this was another impressive performance from the boys who are learning quickly how to play this new style of football. Finally many thanks to Tony Beeches for refereeing and Andy and Jason for running the line in another excellent game played in the right spirit by both teams.
Team: J Russell, A Martin, B Rowbotham, M White B Muinami, W Beechers, L Williams, H Comley, C Wood, D Dennis T Walker subs R Horwood, G Cherry, J Roberson, C Adams
Man of the Match: 1st half T Walker, 2nd half W Beeches

Didcot Boys Emeralds

Result: Didcot Boys Emeralds 0 – 2 Oxford City Colts
Oxford City Colts won the toss and took the kick-off but were immediately pinned back in their own half by Didcot who eventually broke through the midfield to get the first shot on goal. A rattled Oxford City took a couple of minutes to settle and eventually clear their lines. After five minutes a long ball through midfield found Daniel Denis in space and he managed to out run the defence and lift the ball over the Didcot keeper for the first goal. The goal seemed to knock Didcot back and was followed by further pressure from Oxford City but they were unable to break through the Didcot defence and secure a second. On twenty minutes Didcot managed to break through the midfield and put further pressure on Oxford but Bradley Rowbotham held secure in central defence and cleared the ball deep into the Didcot half. This was quickly followed by further pressure from Oxford and a second goal by Tyler Walker to make it 2 nil to Oxford on 25 minutes.

The second half saw both sides come out strongly and an early shot by Didcot was saved by Joe Russell. Didcot continued to put the pressure on Oxford but were caught offside on a number of occasions giving the advantage back to Oxford. After a very evenly balanced second half where neither team were able to make a breakthrough, the game ended Didcot Boys Emeralds 0, Oxford City Colts 2.

Oxford City Colts wore their new black and white away kit sponsored by Amber Wealth Creation. With two away wins out of two the team have had a great start to the season.

Both teams played excellent end to end football and it was a great game to watch on a sunny but blustery day.
Goal Scorers: Daniel Denis, Tyler Walker
Oxford City Colts Captain: Adam Martin
Man of the match (Oxford City Colts): Daniel Denis (first half), Bradley Rowbotham (second half)

Benson Merlins 2 – Oxford City Colts 3

Our first match since changing from 7-a-side to a full size pitch with 11 players was a great success. Pre-season training and friendlies had been at best mixed, with the boys finding it difficult to adjust to the new format. Coach Roger Cherry was lucky to have virtually the same squad who finished last season and the boys, who have now played together as a team for over three years, were determined to do their best. So we travelled south to Benson for the opening game of the season with a sense of optimism mixed with some apprehension about how we would fare with this new style of football.

The match proved to be an excellent contest between two evenly matched teams. Sporting the new away strip kindly sponsored by Shepherd & Woodward and Amberwealth Creations, the Colts team lined up with some of the boys playing in unfamiliar positions. Bradley Rowbotham moved into the heart of the defence with great effect, reading the game well and stifling the Benson attack. It was City who opened the scoring after just five minutes. Tyler Walker raced into the Benson Box only to be fouled by one of the defenders and there were no complaints when the referee pointed to the spot. Adam Martin slotted the ball past the diving keeper’s right hand to give the Colts a well earned lead.

However, it was not long before Benson were back on level terms. City failed to clear a corner and after a number of blocked shots, Benson forced the ball home at the near post. Worse was to follow as with the next attack Benson earned a penalty for handball and despite an excellent attempt by Colts’ goalkeeper Reece Horwood, the well-struck penalty hit the back of the net. The rest of the first half was an even contest with both defences playing well, limiting the number of shooting chances.

At half time Roger Cherry made some changes bringing on Joe Russell in goal, Brian Muiami in defence and Joe Roberson in midfield. The substitutes settled in well, giving Bradley the opportunity to link up with the attack and it was during one of these moves that Colts equalised after 42 minutes. Bradley’s fiercely struck long shot gave the excellent Benson keeper no chance. In the final 20 minutes the Colts lifted their game creating a number a scoring chances. Their endeavour was rewarded in the last two minutes when Tyler Walker finished off an excellent passing move to give Colts a 3-2 win.

Not only was this an excellent way to start the new season, it was very encouraging to see the boys come back after being behind, something that has not been our strength in previous seasons. The spirit shown by all the team was obvious and will hopefully lead to a successful season.
Team: R Horwood (J Russell H/T), A Martin, B Rowbotham, M White (B Muinami H/T), W Beechers, L Williams, H Comley, G Cherry, C Wood (J Roberson H/T), D Dennis (R Horwood 45) T Walker
Man of the Match: B Rowbotham
